University unveils commemoration fund at murdered student Uyinene Mrwetyana’s funeral.
The University of Cape Town will establish a scholarship fund named after Uyinene Mrwetyana, whose rape and murder sparked outrage over gender-based violence across South Africa last week. UCT vice-chancellor Mamokgethi Phakeng revealed the plan at a funeral service for Mrwetyana on 7 September.
“Each time the scholarship is awarded it will be a conscious reminder of the tragic circumstances under which Uyinene’s life was taken and spark the successful recipient to keep the flame of legacy burning brightly,” she said,
