Diamond open-access plans take shape

Paper sets out what a four-tier federation for fee-free open access would look like

Plans have been laid out for how the diamond model of open-access publishing—with no fees for reader or author—could be better supported.

Diamond has been gaining support in recent years, mostly due to the unpopularity among some funders and researchers of the gold model, which often involves paying article processing charges (APCs) to publishers and which detractors say is inequitable.
