Experts voice doubts over plan to use ERA to help phase out animal research

Critics argue European Research Area should prioritise other issues, following Commission proposal

Research and government representatives have expressed doubts about a European Commission proposal for the European Research Area to prioritise phasing in alternatives to using animals in research.

Launched in 2000, the ERA is intended to better align EU member states’ research policies and raise research standards across the bloc. In a recent refresh, EU governments chose 18 ERA policy priorities for 2022-24, including the promotion of attractive research careers and protection of academic freedom.
