UK government to boost efforts to reduce animal use in research

UKRI will double its investment in animal alternatives next fiscal year, minister announces

The science minister has announced plans to speed up the adoption of alternatives to use of animals in research. The government will publish a plan outlining the policies, which include doubling funding for research into animal alternatives.

Andrew Griffith revealed the action in a parliamentary debate on animal use on 19 February. MP Elliot Colburn brought forward the debate in response to two public petitions: one with more than 100,000 signatures calling for the end of animal toxicity tests and another with currently over 30,000 signatures calling for an end to the use of dogs in research.
