The form and function of the UK’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) is once again being contested. New Zealand has scrapped its lookalike system, the Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF). Australia has postponed the next cycle of its evaluation, Excellence in Research for Australia.

So is national assessment still worth it?
